The Village
Washington Square Park
Once known as a drug infested and crime park where no one would ever go, has been cleaned up since the 1990's. The park is a landmark in the neighborhood of Greenwich village. The northern entrance to Washington Square Park displays a beautiful marble arch designed by Stanford White. A curfew set many years ago still remains today.
Christopher park once a tabacco farm, Is now "The Times Square of Greenwich Village". This park displays two pair of the most beautiful same sex statues.Made of bronze and stark white paint. Ideally centered in the largest gay community. I loved the feeling of freedom I felt there.
The Stonewall Inn
On June 28th 1969 police raided the bar and gay patrons stood up to law enforcement and outnumbered them this would be the turning point for gay civil rights.Every year Gay Pride parade ends at the Stonewall Inn. Where pride begins!!!!!!http://thestonewallinnnyc.com
The Northern Dispensary
This building is triangular shaped, the only public building from the federal style period still standing. This building was used for free medical care for the poor. Edgar Allen Poe was once treated here for a cold in 1837.
Merchant's House Museum
Tales of strange and unexplained happenings have surrounded the Merchant's House since the 1930's. It has been reported that people heard, saw, and smelled things that were not their. I did not see or hear anything when we visit the museum. The museum offers a glimpse of how a prosperous merchant family and their Irish servants lived from 1835-1865. The Tredwell's lived in this house from 1835-1933 when the last of their eight children passed away. The house opened as a museum in 1936, and the home still contains furnishings and interior design of Federal and Greek style. It was amazing how little this family had compared to today's family but they were one of the the wealthy in their day. http://www merchantshouse.org/
The museum of reclaimed urban space
Here we meant a tour guide Bill. He was a little eccentric but he took us on a tour of areas of community gardens. The first was 9th street community gardens which is support by the Green Thumb program. Next, was the LaPlaza cultural which also had a community garden and hand painted murals on the side of the buildings facing the garden for all to enjoy. This area was known as a war zone of drugs and gangs but with "Gentrification" this area along with it's gardens has made this urban community more appealing, hopefully not at the expense of the poorer residents.
Bleecker Street
At the end of our day, Erin and myself went to Bleecker street to enjoy the night life. My husband meant us here and we went to a few different bars and walked around. We had a lot of laughs that night and my husband and I plan on going back to listen to a jazz band!!!!!
